Not the reception they hoped for as Bended Elbow closure wrecks wedding plans

08 Jan, 2009 12:16 AM
ENGAGED Delacombe couple Katie Wallman and Chris Crowley loved the service and ambience of The Bended Elbow and thought it would be a great place to hold their wedding reception.

So they booked an October date for their special day.

The first they heard of The Bended Elbow's future being under a cloud was when they read about it in The Courier.

In December the hotel's owners decided to close the hotel indefinitely after problems were identified during a routine fire safety inspection by the Country Fire Authority.

As a result of the inspection the City of Ballarat issued the hotel with a building notice outlining work that was required to improve the venue.

At first Ms Wallman said she had been reluctant to book another venue because it could mean possibly losing a deposit in the event that The Bended Elbow reopened.

However on Monday, Mr Crowley received a call from someone called Sarah at the Cornerstone Hotels group in Melbourne. Sarah advised the couple their reception at the hotel was to be cancelled because

negotiations between the hotel and Ballarat City Council had not yet resolved problems at the hotel.

But when contacted by The Courier, Sarah said she had "no comment" to make about The Bended Elbow's future and was "not sure" whether Cornerstone Hotels, which owns several historic hotels in

Melbourne, owned The Bended Elbow.

The closure of the hotel has resulted in the loss of 30 jobs.

I don't understand why the owner would close. The Country Fire Authority should have had negotiations with the owner, I think they have to answer some questions here. You can't just force closure of a business like this. Fix the problem, then open the venue again. Probably something stupid like one less fire alarm than required. Typical bureaucratic crap. I think some other venue should step in in good faith and offer them a nice place to celebrate their wedding reception.

I find it very odd that the Cornerstone Hotels Group doesn't know what properties it owns, and what the role this organisation's part in this is.

I think they should give this lovely couple their money back so they can have their reception somewhere else...

Another bleeding heart story from the Bogan News wanting to paint a hopeless picture of heartache. Time for the real issues please - global warming, overpopluation, and what's positive that's being done about them. Enough of the bleeting (sic) hearts from netballers and their footy hubbies. This is 2009 courier. Get with it.

How long has this beautiful heritage building been " unsafe " for ? It has been a night club/ restaurant for decades with many renovations and new owners over the years. Is this the real reason for it's closure ?

Something tells me that there is more to the pub's closure than the fire safety concerns... the whole place went down hill after 6 months of it opening...
