Only Ballarat will do, says North Melbourne CEO

07 Feb, 2012 08:31 AM
FOR the past four years, North Melbourne chief executive officer Eugene Arocca has been given a choice of three locations for his club’s community camp.

“I say Ballarat, Ballarat and Ballarat. Anyone of those will do,” Mr Arocca said. “We are the only club that always has our camp in the one location. Our connection to Ballarat is strong and getting stronger.”

That relationship was further strengthened yesterday with the launch of the Kangaroos’ new Eureka memberships aimed solely at the Ballarat region.

The first two membership cards — which feature Ballarat’s Drew Petrie on them — were presented to Ballarat mayor Mark Harris and Ballarat City Council chief executive officer Anthony Schinck at a civic reception yesterday.

“We’re still pushing for games in Ballarat. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can make an announcement.”

Mr Arocca said a North Melbourne club person was also now “on the ground” in Ballarat permanently. Cr Harris said the camps, sponsored by Australia Post, were a great initiative in promoting AFL football in regional areas.

“It also gives people a chance to meet their footy heroes,” Cr Harris said. “Don’t underestimate the boost you can give local football fans just by being accessible.”

Today, North Melbourne players will be at the Central Square Post Office from 10am until 11am.

Australia Post multicultural ambassador Majak Daw said the camps provided a chance for players to get out into the local area, engage with fans and promote the game to regional Australia.

“We can’t wait to get out amongst our members and supporters in the Ballarat region,” Daw said.

North Melbourne aren't even playing in Tassie and the already can't wait to leave. Be careful, Ballarat, as soon as they're in your city they'll be looking elsewhere

Talk about sweeten up - Mr Mayor and Mr CEO get the first two membership cards.

I have a feeling those membership cards are going to cost ratepayers A LOT OF MONEY.

Money that could be better spent helping our elderly and needy.

I"m intrigued with this article. the Ballarat City Council pay North Melbourne FC $300,00 odd to come and run a two day community camp once a year, they hand over 2 membership tickets to the Mayor and CEO who paid them the money,, and they are congratulated and loudly thanked for it. And what can we do next for them ? At their bidding ?

More talk about North Melbourne Football Club connecting with Ballarat.

Just show us your money, because this nervous ratepayer suspects you want me to pay for 'your Ballarat dream'!

Good to see NMFC committing to the region, obviously need the financial gain provided by Tassie in the short run but long term its all about Ballarat and that relationship will grow and grow

Ballarat makes sense for foth the city and the roos. We have a chance to upgrade Ballarat into a city that will get recognition with the bigger cities in Australia, hence attracting elite level sport, top of the line performers etc. and give our economy a sensational boost. 10,000 people are likely to travel from Melbourne every time Ballarat host a game in Melbourne being just an hour away.

North are able to build a 'profitable' second home that won't alienate thier Melbourne supporters and is just an hour away from home.

Sounds like a win-win to me...

Victoria need good country football grounds have a look at NSW and Queensland with their Rugby and Soccer Stadiums in Country centres

around each state.

Why not in Victoria especially Ballarat .

Geelong is the only Stadium in Victoria of any note.

Robbie & Whoever - very short sighted.

North would still play in Tassie. The fact that they have had their camps here for 4 years without a stadium is proof they see value here. - Yes it will cost some ratepayers money, but the influx of income that it will create will also deliver enough money to fix roads, infrastructure and the elderly and needy.

Sometimes the backward thinking of this great City annoys me. Perhaps we should just let this opportunity go to Bendigo or something to make sure we don't upset the fossils. Change is inevitable, at least make sure the City prospers from it!

The knockers and whingers here are the same old usaual supects who cry over "Ratepayer Money", when the fact is that the council will still spend a lot of money eventually in re-building or re-locating the showgrounds. Here is an opportunity for Ballarat to get the AFL, Cricket Auistralia, the State Government all helping to foot the bill on a project that will create 100s of jobs in its construction and employ 100s after it is built. I'm no economist and even I know that this makes dollars and sense.
