FOR the past four years, North Melbourne chief executive officer Eugene Arocca has been given a choice of three locations for his club’s community camp.
“I say Ballarat, Ballarat and Ballarat. Anyone of those will do,” Mr Arocca said. “We are the only club that always has our camp in the one location. Our connection to Ballarat is strong and getting stronger.”
That relationship was further strengthened yesterday with the launch of the Kangaroos’ new Eureka memberships aimed solely at the Ballarat region.
The first two membership cards — which feature Ballarat’s Drew Petrie on them — were presented to Ballarat mayor Mark Harris and Ballarat City Council chief executive officer Anthony Schinck at a civic reception yesterday.
“We’re still pushing for games in Ballarat. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can make an announcement.”
Mr Arocca said a North Melbourne club person was also now “on the ground” in Ballarat permanently. Cr Harris said the camps, sponsored by Australia Post, were a great initiative in promoting AFL football in regional areas.
“It also gives people a chance to meet their footy heroes,” Cr Harris said. “Don’t underestimate the boost you can give local football fans just by being accessible.”
Today, North Melbourne players will be at the Central Square Post Office from 10am until 11am.
Australia Post multicultural ambassador Majak Daw said the camps provided a chance for players to get out into the local area, engage with fans and promote the game to regional Australia.
“We can’t wait to get out amongst our members and supporters in the Ballarat region,” Daw said.
