Our force better resourced than ever: Howard

Our force better resourced than ever: Howard

15 Mar, 2010 11:53 PM
BALLARAT East MLA Geoff Howard yesterday reaffirmed his claim Ballarat police were better resourced than ever before.

"I don't accept they are significantly under resourced, they have more resourcing than they have ever had," he said.

"I understand there is a lot of pressure on police at some times to respond to community issues that come to them and I understand that challenges them, therefore we would like to see more police in Ballarat, but that same situation occurs in other work places."

Mr Howard said front line police in Ballarat had risen from 84 in 1999 when the Labor Government came to power, to 117 today, a figure at odds with claims made by the Police Association who say there are 40 per cent less frontline police in Ballarat now than there were in the early 1990s.

"If staff morale is at an all time low it is only because of the way Simon Overland's comments have been misinterpreted," he said.

"I'd like to see more police at Ballarat and have shared that view with (Police) Minister (Bob) Cameron and the Premier in the past," he said.

"The response has been the number of police has increased by over 40 per cent since 1999.

"I feel there seems to have been a misunderstanding of Simon Overland's comments and I will continue to talk with our police at both the superintendent level and other police in Ballarat and will continue to share that feedback."

Mr Howard if you want us to believe you then you need to really roll out the facts about police numbers. What are the current numbers of police in Ballarat and in what role's are they assigned. Then you can also tell us how many of these officers are off on leave at any one time. How many are currently undertaking other duties, such as doing time at D24 answering phones. Then you can tell us why the D24 operation has not been transferred to ESTA Ballarat yet like it is supposed to have been, which would then free up these officers for other roles. While your at it you can tell us how many are off on work cover etc and finnaly let us know what this equates to in terms of the number of officers working each shift. Working in an emergeency service in Ballarat I can tell you that there has been numerous times when police have been unable to assist us as there is only one crew to man the van to respond to incidents. The Fact is Mr Howard that the numbers on paper do not reflect what the police have to work with. Especially considering officers do not get replaced for a shift if they are sick, the station just runs short!!!! Please join us in the real world!!!!!

You just dont get it do you WE DONT BELIEVE YOU any clear thinking individual can see that there are less police its hard to trust politicions but when the police themselves say that we are grossly understaffed I FOR ONE BELIEVE THEM. moral has been low in the Ballarat police force for years not just in the last few days Howard and Overington need to be kicked out at the next election

Thats right Howard just keep digging yourself a deeper hole. All of Ballarats police force nearly walked out Monday morning (and they still might) Brumby and the Labor party have less police in this state per capita than any other state in Australia and you have the cheek to keep saying we are over resourced we dont believe a word you tell us. Time to go Howard and all of your Labor cronies

why cant a politiction admit when they are wrong instead of trying to cover it up with more lies. This city used to be a safe place to get around Now I am to scared to let my teenage kids in town during the day let alone night time. I lay the blame for this squarly at the feet of the Labor government they had my vote last time but not this time

So Howard says the police are not short on numbers, Overland says crime figures are unaceptable, the police say they are under resourced. Overland says the police are doing the best they can (well thats what he says today anyway). So if crime is up & the police are doing all they can then they must be under resourced. The problem seems to be that the party line is towed, but when the proverbial **** hits the fan its every labour puppet for himself. All the while coppers on the front line get the brunt of criminal activity and public outcry. So come on Howard & Overland answer the question's if Ballarat police have enough resources & crime is still increasing then they can't be doing thier jobs very well, but if they are doing thier jobs to the best of thier ability & crimes going up then obviously they need more resources??? & to think these are people in positions of power, its a worry.

So Howard claims "I want more police for Ballarat". Well we are waiting for it, if he is genuine we should have got some by now..... Otherwise Mr. Howard you are just proving how ineffectual you are.

So, it would appear that Police numbers 'on the beat' in Ballarat have grown roughly in proportion to the growth in population since 1999 - perhaps even at a slightly greater rate than the overall population. BUT, it would also seem that it was from a lower base that might have been the case historically, because of the resources 'cut' during the mid 1990s 'Kennett' era. The Police Association has a charter to make the case for more Police. Clearly they are doing it stridently during an election year. I have vivid memories of the cuts of the 1990s. I reckon that Geoff Howard is right to say that Bracks and Brumby have done a reasonable job in increasing the number of Police on the beat. I wonder what promises we'll hear from both sides of the political fence as election day looms ?

To decide who to vote for in this upcoming state election please answer me these Geoff Howard: Is the crime level in Ballarat currently too high? Does Ballarat have enough police currently stationed here to keep us safe & maintain law & order around the clock? Is the current sentencing in Ballarat's courts tough enough?

Of the 117 police at Ballarat how many are available to be rostered on patrol at any one time? With desk duties, days off, sick leave, WorkCover, Annual Leave, Long Service leave, training and other assorted duties I think we'll see the number available dwindle very rapidly.
