AT LEAST two new paediatricians will begin work in Ballarat by February next year.
The additional doctors are expected to help slash patient waiting times from up to six months to between one and two months.
The recruitment of a third paediatrician is likely, but the appointment is yet to be confirmed.
Paediatrician Dr Harry Zehnwirth said the new supply was a boon for Ballarat.
"By attracting two or three good paediatricians, we'll be ahead of the pack compared to places like Bendigo, Mildura, Shepparton and East Gippsland. In contrast to those areas, we will be very well-serviced," he said.
Dr Zehnwirth said some Shepparton paediatric outpatient clinic patients waited up to 18 months for an appointment.
The new recruits, including the unconfirmed appointment, will bring the number of paediatricians serving the Ballarat region up to five.
They will also offset the loss of paediatrician Dr Brendan McCann, who will leave the city later this month.
Dr Zehnwirth said one of the new paediatricians, Dr Fiona Noble, from Darwin, would work from his new rooms in Howitt St, Wendouree, and Ballarat Health Services.
"She's coming across with her husband, an anaesthetist, so that's a double success for Ballarat," he said.
The second confirmed appointment, Dr Mohammed Jehangir, has been recruited from Western Australia and will work from BHS.
Dr Zehnwirth said Ballarat needed the new paediatrician supply "desperately" after a hectic 12 months.
"There's been an explosion in behavioural and neurodevelopmental problems, like autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability," he said.
"We've had greater demand and lesser supply. Now that we will have the new paediatricians, there will be a better balance of the extra needs being met by more paediatricians."
