Passenger trains making a return at Stawell

Passenger trains making a return at Stawell

11 Apr, 2011 12:09 AM
A RETURN of passenger trains between Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo is being planned by the state government.

During an announcement yesterday that trains would return to Stawell from today, Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder said the Coalition government was also planning for the resumption of passenger rail between the three major regional cities.

Mr Mulder said the planned rail service between Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo would cover a cross-country route via Meredith, Maryborough and Castlemaine.

He said these plans were part of the government's commitment to improving public transport services and connections for people in country Victoria.

Mr Mulder announced yesterday trains would return to Stawell, with an entire carriage of The Overland available for passengers travelling within Victoria at V/Line fares.

He said that from today The Overland train, which operates three weekly return rail services between Melbourne and Adelaide, would make an extra stop at Stawell. An upgrade of Stawell Railway Station was completed this month to allow for the return of passenger rail services.

This upgrade included platform resurfacing, new lighting and seating on the platform, car park works and provision of a coach stop.

"The return of trains to Stawell will mean residents have improved public transport connections to other towns in western Victoria including Nhill, Horsham, Dimboola and Ararat, as well as improved connections to Melbourne," Mr Mulder said.

"Tourism and the local economy will receive a great boost with The Overland bringing many interstate and international passengers to the area each week."

"Passengers in western Victoria will have access to up to 60 seats on all Overland trains," Mr Mulder said.

"This means more people can travel between country towns in western Victoria and connect to Melbourne at standard V/Line fares."

An excellent idea! Imagine catching a train one sunny day and travelling to Geelong and admiring some of the best scenery in the world! I adore the Brisbane Ranges and to see it by train would be so romantic, yes?

Castlemaine, I love you and always will!

Gorgeous!

Wonderful news, about time someone thought of connecting these cities with trains running through Ballarat. Used to take the train to Geelogn but once the line shut and buses were put on the route, I have driven there rather than take the bus.

I suggest anyone interested in the cross country line between Bebdigo, Ballarat and Geelong, get in touch with the minister Terry Mulder and say how much you agree with this idea, would lend support to this proposal. Go to the Victorian government web site, then to minister for transport.

So Mulder, is taking credit for a project that was first instigated by the present member for Ripon Joe helper. Just like all of the other Rail Services that joe, has opened over the years.

BRING IT ON. Every time I travel to Geelong, Bendigo and Castlemaine I look at the railway lines sitting there doing nothing and think about just how inadequate the bus services are (not to mention the current one-way train route to Maryborough). Provided it is done properly this new network will be an absolute boon for Ballarat as we are in the centre of it. Most travelers will stop or change here. Now we need to start planning now for a tram to Sovereign Hill and Lake Wendouree to tap into the people who arrive here without their cars.

now all we need is the overland to run every day, and that stawell station will actually be of use... 3 trains a week? what is the point of that? and trains from bendigo to geelong via ballarat will be equally useless if they are of similarly poor service frequency to the overland or trains to maryborough... do the job properly, or don't bother wasting our money.

justin, the mildura line does not run through bendigo... it branches from the western main line at ballarat then through maryborough and onto mildura via st arnaud and ouyen. to go via bendigo, you would have to lay around 150km of track to link mildura and swan hill, at around $20mil per km, does anyone think that such a high cost is worth it considering the other projects that would be of far more benefit to far more people? the line through maryborough is good to go (I believe it has recently been upgraded), all we need is for v/line to find a train or two and schedule the services to run.

While they're at it, why not continue another 70kms up the road to Horsham where there is 3.5 times the population of Stawell.

Great Idea...

A comprehensive train network should be initiated nd it should be as soon as possible.
