 Passenger trains return to Maryborough

Passenger trains return to Maryborough

26 Jul, 2010 12:37 AM
MARYBOROUGH residents turned up in droves to see the first passenger train in 17 years steam into the station on Saturday.

There were cheers and even some tears, as Premier John Brumby spoke to the hundreds gathered on the platform.

Mr Brumby was on board the first service from Creswick to Maryborough, and said it was heartening to see people standing by the tracks and waving as the train went through.

"It's a wonderful thing for the community and I think they'll look back on this day for decades to come as a very, very happy day," he said.

Passenger services to Maryborough stopped in 1993 and Mr Brumby said the millions of dollars spent on reconnecting the town was an investment.

The initial timetable will have two services a day, seven days a week, with the option to increase services if there is demand.

"If you look at the number of V/Line passengers today we're running nearly double the number of passengers we were a decade ago," Mr Brumby said.

"We're starting with 14 services a week and V/Line will look at what the patronage is.

"It's always hard to tell, but I actually think it will be a sell-out success."

The Maryborough station itself has undergone a makeover, with restoration works to the tune of $1.9 million done to the old sandstone, brickwork and spouting. As well as an upgrade to carparking.

"Mark Twain once said Maryborough is a railway station with a town attached, it's always been a magnificent station," Mr Brumby said.

Maryborough resident Brenda Humphrey got a bit teary when she spoke about the return of passenger services.

"It's the greatest thing, I'm so emotional about it," she said.

"When it's school holidays my son and I are going to do a trip to Ballarat."

Public transport minister Martin Pakula said public transport in the region would be further boosted with the government's recent commitment to invest $7 million to return services to Clunes as part

of the Regional Victoria Blueprint.

The government is yet to announce whether Talbot will be included on the service.

poor old Brumby, pakula and no helper couldn't keep a train on time if their jobs depended on it! More spin, the times for trains to catch in creswick is outrageous, will suit no one who works

You would think Mr brumby was the local member the number of times he has been in the area lately. He must be really worried about the prospects of Joe Helper and Geoff Howard who havnt done much in the last 3 years to be spending so much time up here. Poor old joe helper is meant to be the agriculture minister, but he's hardly said a thing in parliament and let locusts get hold when he was told about the problem almost a year ago and failed to help the farmers, its all a bit late now joe..

Great to see the train back, but really two trains a day, how pathetic, no wonder Kennett got rid of the line. Im sure patronage will skyrocket with the huge amount of trains to choose from.... not.

I'm disappointed in the local member Joe No Helper and won't be voting for him again. The spin about rail sevices and ambulances is all spin

Typical Labor have botched the train timetable. One service return per day taking people out of our city but not bringing Visitors to Maryborough to spend money. Train is too late to help anyone who wants to find a job in Melbourne. Massive FAIL Labor.

Ah yes, already planned for this to happen eh Mr Brumby? So why did you move the track away from historic Creswick station and then have to spend money on a new platform. You have Mr Helper have no plan, just panic to cling to office

The service has opoend up Creswick to wonderful weekends in Melbourne. Creswick now has Stkilda Beach, Brunswick Street Fitzroy, The Royal Botaniv Gardens, The State Library, NGV and whole plethora of other marvellous amenities at its fingertips. As a Creswick tree change resident I am absolutely thrilled. My family and I will be joy riding each weekend, and when visitors come to call from afar we can meet them in Melbourne or Ballarat and take then into Creswick on the train, which happens to pass through a delightfully scenic corridor of aussie bush, pine plantations and rural acerage. We are back on the map. Horray!

There doesn't seem to be any changes to the couch to Castlemaine then Train to Bendigo?Am I missing something?i hope so, as I was hoping Maryborough and Bendigo wld finally be linked with a train only service as the couch/train option takes ages!

I cannot believe that some of you people are complaining about the returned services and that it's an ALP fail. Seems like you would prefer the 'no services per week' that the Liberals introduced in 1993.
