Pets the preferred companion for Valentine's Day

FORGET curling up on the couch with your partner.

For many pet owners, Toto or Tiger will be the preferred companion this Valentine’s Day, a survey suggests.

The survey, commissioned by World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), polled 683 pet owners nationwide, asking who they would rather spend Valentine’s Day with and who they would buy a gift for.

QUIZ: How well do you know Valentines Day?

Fourteen per cent said they would rather spend February 14 with their pet than their partner, and 42 per cent rated their pets in the top three of those with whom they would like to spend the day.

Eighteen per cent of women and 10 per cent of men said they would prefer to spend the day with their pet than their partner.

Single men were more likely than single women to buy their pets a gift, at 12 per cent compared with 5 per cent.
