Planning already under way for a follow-up beer fest

22 Jan, 2012 11:39 PM

PLANS are already under way for next year’s Ballarat Beer Festival after Saturday’s event was embraced by large numbers of locals and visitors alike.

Until early evening, the festival featured live music and quality local food, with visitors tasting boutique and craft beers from as far away as the Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley.

Food stands selling everything from gourmet fish and chips to paella and pizza enjoyed long lines of hungry customers.

It was standing room only for much of the afternoon with long trestle tables and hay bales proving popular in the warm conditions. The most prepared brought picnic rugs to spread out in front of the live music stage, and the popular children’s area complete with jumping castle and entertainment.

Visiting from Hobart, Margaret Hardwick said she was sceptical when her husband James suggested they attend the event.

“We drove from Melbourne as part of our holiday and I thought it was only going to be enjoyable for him but we’re having a great time,” she said.

“More cities should do something like this.

“Everyone is having a fantastic time and I haven’t seen anyone getting carried away with the grog.”

The couple nominated Kooinda Boutique Brewery as their favourite beers of the day.

Ballarat home brew aficionado Rob Hogan said there were too many beers to sample but he was trying to get through the list. “I didn’t know so many craft beers existed and I am trying to sip as many as I can,” he said.

Just wish the event was more affordable. The day only catered for the rich.

With friends from Gippsland with us. We attended the beer fe stival. And we all had our favorite bveers and food The music was excellent and our fav was Stonefeild excellent the only item we would like to see next year is a free water truck so we all could refresh ourself as the day was hot & it would assist with the balance of beer & hydration. Thanks for this event looking forward to next years

@Dissapointed - the day was focused at people who enjoy boutique beers, live music and good food (ie. people with disposable income who aren't interested in VB stubbys and Rizzo Pizzas). Ballarat caters for the plebs every Sunday, its called Trash and Treasure - it's about time an event for the elite and pompous fat cats was started. I propose a strict screening process for this type of event to make sure no one who drives a Holden or a Ford can enter. If only I was in power...

The day was expensive but very enjoyable.

A couple of criticisms:

I didn't think it was a sensible decision to screen peoples bags for water bottles - people need to stay hydrated at a beer festival with no shade.

I've been to wine festivals where its 50 bucks to get in and the wine tasting is free - I thought it would be a similar thing here, and if you like the beer you buy a pot or a pint. The measures were a bit sketchy to say the least!
