PM Rudd visit: hundreds attend public forum

18 Feb, 2010 12:08 AM
WIND farms and home births were on the agenda last night at the Community Cabinet Public Forum.

Hundreds of community members and civic leaders filled the Ballarat High School gym to take part.

Outside, anti-wind farm protesters lined Sturt St with their placards, sending their message loud and clear.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd led the forum, discussing the projects the Federal Government had helped implement in Ballarat and future plans.

Questions from the floor covered topics from climate change and the youth allowance to housing affordability and transport.

One woman discussed her experiences with Waubra Wind Farm and how it made her ill.

Mr Rudd acknowledged her situation and said the Government aimed to get the balance right, to satisfy the people but ensuring communities were sustainable.

Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon fielded queries from women concerned over their rights surrounding home births.

After the forum, The Courier canvassed eight community leaders to discuss Cabinet's visit.

They were all grateful for the opportunity to be heard, with little disappointment about the visit.

Committee for Ballarat chief executive officer Doug Lloyd met with Mr Rudd to discuss sustainable water solutions for the region and the Ballarat West growth zone.

He said the committee's suggestions were met with encouragement and follow-up invitations.

Ballarat Child and Family Services acting chief executive officer Michael Brandenburgexpressed disappointment at not being able to receive the $2.5 million funding it needed to build its proposed Early Parenting Centre.

"We spoke to Bill Shorten about it ... the money isn't there," he said.

"We will keep pursuing it with our local member."

Ballarat Renewable Energy and Zero Emissions executive officer Lisa Kendal, who met with Climate Change and Water Minister Penny Wong, said it was a very positive experience to discuss local concerns around climate change.

"We got the opportunity to voice our position quite strongly," she said.

Mr Rudd's visit is a fantastic event for the city. Ballarat has the potential to be amongst Australia's premier regional cities. Sure the winter can be cold and wet, but there are so many positives going for the place we call home. Come again Kev, you are welcome any time (PS. please supply us with 100+ extra policemen/women urgently)

What a crock, a choreographed micro managed farce. An 'invitation only' venture with a secretive intinery known only to the ALP faithful to stack the 'streets/venues' that he was going to be at. What is he afraid of? Legitimate questioning and accountability? The 'security' angle does not cut it. Two years on and he turns the first sod on Anthony's cutting..pfft...and "Proud expatriot', you may wanna ask Brumby STATE Labor about more police - it's THEIR failure and THEIR domain. Notice another 'cosy' media meeting (cough) in an election year, this time with Angela Carey. He didn't have to bother, Angela and this red rag paper have always been in Labor's back pocket anyway. Rudd's visit? - EPIC charade.

It was sad the Aboriginal father Peter Clarke who's child was kidnapped didn't get to see the Aboriginal Affairs Minister when Mr Rudd told the audience that he could have a 10 minute meeting with her. It just goes to show that Aboriginal people are still being deceived! I'm "sorry" Peter for your tragic loss and disappointment!

Hogwash Mr Ruddspin, you have no idea, The Courier is not pro-Labor and never has been. Did you register on the PMs website to go to the PUBLIC FORUM which was open to anyone? Obviously Not. My objective opinion of Angela Carey, The Courier's editor, is that she is frank, open and honest with an unbiased view. The PMs itinerary would be secret for security reasons - no different to any other PMs in the last 50 years. Loser on every point.

You must be joking whoever? The Courier has been a propaganda machine for Labor for years. A little more questioning of local events and happenings would not go astray.

Ruddspin's outrageous slur on Angela Carey demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of how the media works and a total lack of knowledge of Angela's integrity. It speaks more of Ruddspin's blind political bias than hers. When will party people get it? Journos hate all pollies equally. I know dozens and I know this to be true.

Dudd, Wong, Conboy, and Mr Baldy, spin Ballarat as much as you like. You are the worst government in 50 years in this country. Our kids are going to be paying your debt off for the next two decades. Do the honourable thing and resign.

Can someone please explain why an editor having a cup of tea with a Prime Minister makes her Labor? I saw her having lunch with Judy Verlin not so long ago. Doesn't that make her Liberal?

I must say, Kevin Rudd is the master of spin. His government is pathetic, all talk and no action. How many times do you hear Rudd say " it's our number one priority" to whatever or whichever issue he is faced with? Whilst I don't always agree with what the Libs do, at least you know they will tkae a stance, make it happen. I also love the "con job" of Mr Rudd having his sleeves rolled up. A shame it's all fake. Brumby and Rudd are of the same mould.
