Police too busy to help: threatened store owner

17 Mar, 2010 12:27 AM
ON FIVE occasions in the past year, Rediscovery CDs owner Paul Howlett has been subject to threats and abuse from a man who repeatedly attempts to steal from his store.

But every time he - or in one case a customer - called police for help, the response has been the same.

They are too busy to send anyone.

"Once when he came in and was abusing me at the counter, one of my customers called the police to come and the police said, `sorry, we haven't got anyone to go there','' he said.

The Sturt St business owner said he is not alone.

Many of the shop owners around him have told of receiving the same response when reporting similar incidents to police.

"After one of the first times he came in we called the police and they said we had to type out a trespass notice and give it to him,'' he said.

"They said if he comes back again after you have given him that he's breaking the law, so call us and we will come straight around.

"He came back in about two weeks ago after we gave it to him, so my girlfriend phoned to tell them.

"They are still yet to come."

Mr Howlett said he did not blame Ballarat police for their lack of response.

On Tuesday, a group estimated at 50 members marched to the office of Ballarat East MLA Geoff Howard in a bid to have more numbers posted in the city.

Maybe Mr Howlett should call Geoff Howard next time and ask him to come and remove this nuisance from his store.

Typical response that highlights the need for more police resources required for Ballarat especially walking the beat around Sturt St and Bridge St mall.

Numerous occasions i have called the police after hearing my neighbours having violent arguments... well over an hr later police arrive... poor women could already be dead... More police are needed in Ballarat end of story.

Same old story again........ lazy police that cant be bothered! Quick they had better call in the backup unit from Melbourne to show these local boys how to do there job properly. There is a handful of good coppers that go above and beyond but the majority just cant be bothered and now it is starting to show accross the community instead of just in the nightlife scene. Maybe they should start addressing the police issues and stop trying to deflect there lack of incompetance and resources back on the public. At the end of the day the police arent the ones that suffer... its the public. Come on boys lift your game a little!

the comment from poor police about "lazy police" obviously comes from an uneducated and outside view...when the van is simultaneously faced with responding to a brawl, burglarly in progress and domestic, which one do you choose???.....the backup unit you refer to, the ORU, are based in Melbourne and only travel to Ballarat with prior planning. Why do you think local police protested the other day about not able to respond to ALL calls for help as quickly as they would like.

I dont understand why Paul had to issue a trespass notice??? Isn't it still a crime to attempt to steal, threaten someone with violence and cause a public nuisance? Shouldn't the police be the ones required to face the perpetrator.....not the victim? What's the point of having them, if they're becoming powerless to DO anything? The big issues...more police desperately needed on Ballarat's streets; a complete and radical change to our judicial system; and more power given to the police (less rights to the sub-intellectual crooks who have become predators in our society).
