LAL Lal Falls has been identified as the Ballarat region's favourite natural attraction.

A survey conducted as part of The Courier's Pride of Ballarat series saw Lal Lal receive 37 per cent of votes, surprisingly edging our Lake Wendouree which secured 32 per cent of the vote.

RESULTS

  • L al Lal 37.5%
  • Lake Wendouree 32.3%
  • Mount Buninyong 9.4%
  • Other 7.3%
  • Mount Warrenheip 4.2%
  • Lake Learmonth 4.2%
  • Lake Burrumbeet 4.2%
  • Creswick Regional Park 1%
  • The Pride of Ballarat series is running throughout 2012, asking readers of The Courier to identify what we love about our cities and surrounds in 12 different categories.

The top choice in each category will be detailed in a 2013 calendar to be produced later this year. Readers can secure this calendar for free by collecting the tokens published on each Pride of Ballarat spread.

The next category is Heritage Buildings which will be published tomorrow.

  • The lucky voter winner in the natural attractions category is Susan Muller of Mt Clear. She receives two tickets to Regent Cinemas, Ballarat.

Quite sure Lake wendouree isn't natural but started life as a swamp and was dammed in the 19th century.

sounds like tomorrow's is as narrow in thought as this one ... focusing on "buildings" is so 40 years behind the time. Why not heritage places courier?

Hope you all realise that Lal Lal is in Moorabool, so first choice is not yours and second choice is a swamp.

Yeah, like the others said...the Courier should have left out the word 'natural' if it wanted people to vote for the lake...

It is saying Ballarat Region, not Ballarat Council. So I don't think it matters which Council Lal Lal Falls is in....?

An international environmental disgrace is a better description of the Moorabool River. The irrigators have the river in a death roll. Only a mass outcry will save the river. Nice photo of a flood but normally the river is literally a small drain as it arrives in Geelong. Glad the people of Ballarat identified the river as important but its almost dead in terms of a living system. Come on Ballarat lets do something about it! Stand up for the Living Moorabool - she needs all the help she can get before its too late.

Has anyone visited Lal Lal falls recently ??? we took our picnic lunch out there on New Years day, they've cut down most of the trees, and there is just a wee trickle of water.......... I certainly wouldn't rate it as my favourite natural attraction. ....

Just cos Ballarat has nothing but a swamp and even "other" ran 4th, no reason for you to be ashamed nikki, Lal Lal is a great community and would welcome you.
