QC offers insight on refugees

12 Mar, 2008 12:14 AM
GASPS came from an audience of over 400 people last night when human rights barrister Julian Burnside QC gave an insight into Australia's treatment of refugees and the stolen generations.

In his speech as part of the first In the Spotlight series at the Wendouree Centre for Performing Arts, Mr Burnside said it was "depressing" to see our country behaving so badly towards refugees and the stolen generations.

Mr Burnside was senior counsel for Liberty Victoria in the Tampa litigation and has acted pro bono in many human rights cases, in particular concerning the treatment of refugees.

His one-hour speech included case studies of refugees at the Baxter Detention Centre in South Australia and members of the stolen generations, giving everyone in the audience something to think about.

World Vision Australia chief executive Tim Costello will present the next In the Spotlight forum at the Wendouree Centre for performing Arts in May.

Inquiries: Jo Huntley 5339 1191.
