ALSTOM has celebrated the halfway point of a $370 million contract to provide 58 new passenger trains for Melbourne.
The Ballarat rail transport manufacturer is contracted to make 58 three-car X-Trapolis units on behalf of Connex.
With a contract completion date of the end of the year, yesterday marked the half-way point as unit 29 rolled off the production line.
Alstom state manager Ivan Waterfield celebrated the half-way point of the contract with a lunchtime barbecue with workers yesterday.
"We're on schedule and on-track and this will be the first new rolling stock in 20 years in Victoria," Mr Waterfield said.
"Up to 80 people are employed on the contract at Ballarat and each train is fitted with four security cameras in each car, which the driver can view on a console."
