Rare photos of John Lennon to be seen in Ballarat

THE Beatles legend John Lennon is coming to Ballarat next year.Ballarat will be the only Australian city to host John Lennon - Imagine!, an exhibition of more than 60 rare images of the musician by world-class photographers including, Dixie Dean and Tom Hanley.They date from Lennon's childhood through to his early career with The Beatles. The exhibition will be on display at the Art Gallery of Ballarat from Saturday, February 21 until Monday, April 13.It will be on loan from London's Proud Galleries, which first displayed the photographs last year.City of Ballarat cultural development manager Ron Egeberg - who secured the rights to the exhibition during a trip to London in September - said it was a major coup for Ballarat."Because of the profile of our gallery, they (Proud Galleries) were more than happy to work with us to present this wonderful exhibition," Mr Egeberg said.Mr Egeberg described Lennon as a "legend"."He has broad appeal and is considered one of the great legendary artists of the 20th century," Mr Egeberg said.The exhibition will also feature paintings and sculptures from the 1960s and 1970s, which form part of the Art Gallery of Ballarat's collection.The exhibition will coincide with the 28th anniversary of Lennon's assassination.Tickets will be adult $9, concession $5, and children under 16 free.
