Rare tortoises join Ballarat Wildlife Park family

13 Mar, 2009 12:05 AM
THEY'RE tiny, very rare and the latest attraction to the Ballarat Wildlife Park.

Four Indian Star tortoises - Bobble, Astro, Nugget and Pluto - will soon be on display in the reptile house.

The shy creatures were bred at the Melbourne Zoo and have been at the Ballarat Wildlife Park for the past few months.

At only six months old, they currently measure a mere 8cm to 10cm, but are expected to grow up to 30cm.

The largest measured Indian Star Tortoise grew to 36cm.

Animal keeper Cindy Jones said park staff were thrilled to have the new additions.

"Not many zoos have them, they're critically endangered,'' Ms Jones said.

The tortoises can be found in desert and forest climates and are very resilient. They boast distinctive markings on their shells with black and yellow radiating streaks that are narrow and numerous.

The tortoises will go on display this Sunday.
