LINING up in the service road before quickly darting out into Sturt St will soon be a distant memory for Alfredton drivers as a planned redevelopment of the busy road moves ahead.Funding arrangements between Ballarat City Council and VicRoads are being finalised and developer Roadcon is continuing to work on construction details.Council agreed to enter into a funding arrangement with VicRoads at a meeting last week, with the city contributing $2.1 million towards the $7 million project. The contribution includes $400,000 in capital works expenditure and $1.7 million which will be recouped by council from developers over the next three or four years as the west of Ballarat continues to grow. The Sturt St upgrade will see two new lanes constructed along the Avenue of Honour, a roundabout built at the intersection of Learmonth and Sturt streets and signals installed at the intersection of Sturt St and Ring Rd.Trees along the famous avenue will be preserved and improved as the development goes ahead.Last week, Roadcon welcomed council's decision to enter into a funding agreement for the upgrade."This decision represents a significant step towards delivering a safer and less congested Sturt St, while also preserving the Avenue of Honour," a statement from the company said. The plan was approved by Heritage Victoria in December last year, with a permit issued subject to a number of specific construction criteria.Roadcon said work on the construction details was continuing, with the company working closely with council and VicRoads. "Several aspects of the planning required to satisfy these criteria, such as the Heritage and Tree Management Plan, require further approval from Heritage Victoria before works can commence," the statement said."These works will see Sturt St upgraded between Learmonth St and Ring Rd, thereby alleviating damage currently caused by 16,300 cars per day travelling too close to the Avenue of Honour trees."Roadcon will update the community on construction timings and schedules prior to works commencing."
