Red-hot race fever

31 Oct, 2005 10:34 PM
THOUSANDS of Ballarat residents will bolt for the nearest television set when Makybe Diva races for Melbourne Cup immortality today.

And a seat around the office screen is sure to be scarce by 3pm.

But for those able to slip away, a number of businesses have pulled out the stops to celebrate the race that stops a nation.

The day will start early at JD's Sports Bar in Lydiard St.

Open from 8am, the on-site TAB will allow punters to place bets before work.

And if residents have not made a wager by this morning, they have been urged to hussle and avoid the afternoon rush.

Owner Jason Yean will offer $5 and $10 sweeps, and has 15 television screens lined up to show the big race.

"It will be a good, fun day," he said.

Ballarat's women will be spoilt for choice this afternoon as Ladies' Day festivities kick off around the city.

Oscar's Hotel and Cafaacé Bar will offer a large screen television, fashions-on-the-field, and hot and cold tappas throughout the day.

"It's filling fast, but people can call and make a booking in the morning," supervisor Simon Powell said.

Each ticket holder will receive a cup sweep entry.

Meanwhile, the George Hotel and Cafe is expecting a large crowd to take advantage of its plasma screen television and $2-$5 sweeps.

For the once-a-year punters wondering how to back a winner, The Courier sports editor and racing writer David Brehaut said a laid-back approach might be the best option.

"The more form you study sometimes, the harder it can be," he said.

Other "sure-fire" tips, or myths, include choosing a strong name, appealing colours, or a successful trainer or jockey.

For those going to Flemington, sticking with the first trainer or jockey seen is also sound advice.

Sunscreen and shades will be the order of the day as the temperature soars as high as 28C for the $5.1 million race.
