Residents swim in grass plague

04 Jan, 2008 11:24 PM
THE lake may be well and truly empty but Learmonth residents are still swimming in one thing - fairy grass.

Lake Learmonth Caravan Park owner Rosemary Davies described the fairy grass plague as being "out of control".

"Since Christmas Eve, it has been really bad," Ms Davies said.

"For three days, we were covered in it - we couldn't move."

Ms Davies has now resorted to putting up barriers in the form of shade clothes to "try and divert it away."

"When it's at its worst, we are out every half hour trying to clean it up," she said.

"But before you know it, it's back again - it just hurtles around out here."

"And at one point the other day, the grass was two metres deep in some parts."

On Thursday, Ms Davies filled 16 wool bags with fairy grass which had intruded on the park.

Yesterday, another eight bags were filled to the brim with the weed.

And this is on top of regular assistance from a dedicated fairy grass removal crew from the Ballarat City Council.

"It certainly keeps you on your toes - that's for sure," she laughed.

Next week, a controlled burn off will take place on the dry lake bed in an attempt to control the fairy grass problem.

However, Ms Davies was reluctant to believe it would help bring an end to the issue.

"They've tried burning it before and it didn't work - it just seemed to fizzle," she said.

"We'll just wait and see what happens."
