Residents urged to dob in a rubbish dumper

03 Nov, 2009 10:48 PM
RESIDENTS of the Ballarat region can help clean up the city this month by dobbing in a dumpsite to stamp out illegal rubbish dumping.

Highlands Regional Waste Management Group education programs manager Rosemary Angus said information received from the public about illegal dumpsites would lead to investigations to find the culprits. There might even

be closed-circuit television cameras installed to catch dumpers in the act.

She said the City of Ballarat spends about $35,000 each year cleaning up illegally dumped rubbish.

"Litter seems to breed litter, and a lot of people, if they see a site, think they will add their pile to it.

"There is systematic dumping on some sites that people are using regularly, so we are hoping this campaign will help us catch some repeat offenders."

Ms Angus said "anything and everything'' is dumped across the region . . . household waste, whitegoods, tyres, chemicals and car bodies".

She described such acts as "environmental vandalism" and said the new campaign, funded by the Environmental Protection Authority, would help people realise the damage they caused.

"They are too lazy to take their rubbish

to the transfer station and are not prepared to accept responsibility for it."

People can dob in a dumpsite until December 9 by going to www.hrwmg.vic.gov.au

What is wrong with you people, The cost of the tip in ballarat is the worst I have seen. It has nothing to do with being lazy, We can not all afford to sit around in offices and make tons of cash, some people have a family to support and bills to pay. So straight back at ya...what are you going to do about the cost of taking rubbish to the tip? I swear if you people put your brains together you may almost manage to stem a single brain cell and start using forward thinking instead of this rubbish, start cleaning up yourselves before you tell other what to do and talk about the cost, we rate/tax payer bear the cost of that not you but you do not listen to us as we are the mere grunts below you. I say we should all dump our rubbish on the city council steps because thats were rubbish belongs!

If the council Transfer Station was not so expensive people may use it more.

I agree it is an eye sore and not the responsible thing to do but it costs alot of money to take these items to the tip - $30 for a mattress - $50 for some cardboard boxes - alot of people just can't afford that sort of money. Don't we pay enough in rates already?

i often go for walks in bush and forest and i am astounded at the rubbish that people dump because they wont pay a few dollars to take it to a transfer station dont they realise that the petrol they are using to find their isolated places would cover their costs.

Gee, money, you must have had a truck load. I took a doubl bed matress and a load of rubbish in a trailer to the Learmonth st recycle centre and it cost me $20 for the lot. Hard rubbish collection is whats needed. Make the streets a big swap meet!

Wow, from the previous 4 responses 3 condone the dumping of illegal rubbish! After recently moving to Ballarat we have realised there is a real redneck/ignorant mindest that is pervasive in this 'town', and the majority of those that hold these backward views are born and bred locals. Perhaps they should get out more. They might then realise the 'real' cost of removing rubbish is actually much higher than the tip fees. Hopefully the inevitable demographic shift of people oustside of ballarat moving in may slowly change some peoples beliefs, in the meantime im all for the council heavily fining these twits. Im waiting eagerly for the 'if you dont like it dont live here' responces :)

I'm a single parent with more than 3 children and not at all like the "rednecks" as chrisb states. I stay home fulltime with my kids and we do have a lot of rubbish with little money left over to get rid of it. I do EVERYTHING on my own and never ask for help unless my kids need it. My point is, there is NO excuse for dumping rubbish or complaining about the cost of tip fees. Maybe you should try saving $5 a week and get a skipbin as I do every 6 months or so, surely if I can do it anyone can. Go on give it a go you might suprise yourself.

Yes, the costs to dump rubbish at the Ballarat transfer station are outrageous & I am also not surprised that people are resorting to illegal dumping. This is not the same as condoning it either chrisb BTW.

Well put "chrisb". Going to the tip for a domestic reason should not be a very regular activity. So why whinge about the cost. Normal ratepayers use their weekly bin and maybe 2 or 3 times a year have to go to the tip for other items. If you need to go to the tip more often then quite simple, you pay. If you want to do something about it then put your name down for the next election. It is OK "chrisb" we are not all the same here, some of us have never seen the movie "Deliverance" . (Between you and me I think some other locals were in it!)
