Rock attack on Ballarat shuttle bus

30 Jul, 2010 11:36 PM
A ROCK thrown at a Ballarat shuttle bus on route from Melbourne airport on Thursday, smashed a side window of the bus and startled an elderly passenger.

The incident happened at around 1.45pm as the shuttle passed Ballarat Secondary College east campus in Victoria Street heading towards Ballarat.

Proprietor of Ballarat Coachlines David Wakeling said the driver of the bus reported seeing a group of students just before the rock hit the bus.

He said the driver pulled the bus over but the students had already disappeared.

"An elderly woman sitting beside the window that was broken was showered with glass," Mr Wakeling said.

Mr Wakeling said he is relieved the consequences of the incident weren't as bad as they could have been with nobody badly injured.

"This is such a serious and dangerous thing to do. The rock could have gone through the windscreen which may have resulted in an accident and serious injuries."

Mr Wakeling said this type of thing had never happened to one of his buses and he would like to see the behaviour nipped in the bud so no copycat episodes follow.

The damaged window will cost up to $6000 to replace.

Ballarat police want to hear from any witnesses.

Not even safe on public transport anymore. Glad the lady is Ok and nothing worse came out of it. The driver seen students so the school should be closely looked at, someone will hear from one of culprits and if they do they should come forward. It's not dobbing them, it's protecting that they won't repeat. The guilty are probably either laughing about it or "hopefully" are in great fear of being found out, then they should come forward, whether you threw the rock or with the person that did. Make the school suffer from the incident, the guilty will owe up.
