THE former Regent Hotel in Lydiard Street North is set to receive a major refurbishment after winning approval from Ballarat City Council last night.
An application to add a third-storey rooftop terrace area to the historic building was approved, with patron numbers at the venue to increase from 300 to 450.
To complete the exterior restoration, a nearby traffic light at the intersection of Mair Street will be moved at the cost of the hotel’s owners.
The building has been gutted over recent months, awaiting a planning permit.
Councillor Samantha McIntosh used last night’s council meeting to seek clarification from planning officers about heritage details of the building, including the preservation of a feature window backing onto a laneway.
She said the application was in keeping with the council’s CBD and heritage policies and she welcomed the improvements.
The venue was closed in July after operating as a nightclub for 11 years, with the nearby Bluestone nightclub receiving a large share of the Regent’s former patrons.
In it’s former state, the Regent’s popularity peaked in 2004 and 2005 by attracting a mature clientele.
Under the plan that was approved last night, the hotel’s liquor licence will be revised to include operation until 1am, rather than the current 5am closure.
The footpath and terrace area will only be used until 10pm, and restrictions will be in place preventing live music on licensed balconies and the terrace and restricting waste-collection times.
The planning report considered by the council described the rooftop terrace as contemporary and designed to have minimal impact.
