A PAPERLESS office might sound like a vision of the next millennium, but Ballarat District Nursing and Healthcare district nurses are getting a taste of what it could be like.BDNH's software development and application arm UNITI, located at the University of Ballarat Technology Park, has developed a tablet PC computer software program for field nurses to access, update and transfer client information in 'real time' while visiting patients. At the touch of a button nurses will be able to quickly and efficiently transfer information to GPs, access patient information from head office or view their next patient's details.Where nurses would previously have to return to the office following their patient consultations to complete associated paperwork, much of this transfer of information has been removed.Uniti software manager Dean Parish said the PC tablet and software application has been tested by nurses at BDNH and will be fully implemented in coming weeks."District nursing is a time-intensive job, with nurses required to travel across the Ballarat region, visit several patients per day, and report on critical information," Mr Parish said. "By removing the need for field nurses to return to the office after visiting patients to complete associated paperwork saves time and could make some nurses feel more independent in their job." Uniti is also working on a project to assist with the management of wounds. It involves using MMS (multimedia messaging service) technology to photograph a patient's wound, upload the photograph to patient records and/or send it to the appropriate person for follow up. Previously there was a lag between the identification of the wound issue and treatment, however the immediacy of the MMS technology is now limiting this time.Uniti has achieved outstanding success over recent years by designing and developing software for health services across Victoria and interstate.
