SEBASTOPOL College's Basilisk Performance Racing Team overcame some stiff competition recently to be crowned national champion at the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge in Melbourne.
In September, the team will compete at the world championships in Singapore for the ultimate prize - $1.5 million in Cambridge University scholarships.
More than 35,000 students from across Australia competed in the competition, which is designed to expose young people to career opportunities in engineering, manufacturing and technical industries.
Each of Sebastopol College's four team members had a specific job, with Brett Sizeland the designer and manufacturing engineer, Ben Kersten the resource manager, Warren Mahomet the graphic designer and Aidan Cowie the team manager.
Mr Sizeland said competition was tough at the event, which was held during the Australian Grand Prix.
"Our car was the quickest, which helped, but it's more than that as you need to do well in all the categories to win," Mr Sizeland said.
Those categories included car design, innovation, marketing, and technical folio.
The last time an Australian team won the world championships was in 2005-06.
And Mr Sizeland and his teammates will now do everything in their power over the next four months to help make sure that happens again.
