 Services cut across Ballarat region

Services cut across Ballarat region

06 Sep, 2010 01:15 AM
THOUSANDS of households were without power on the weekend after flood waters tore through Victoria.

By yesterday afternoon most of the electricity faults had been addressed in Ballarat and power had returned to Creswick and Clunes.

Powercor spokesman Hugo Armstrong said about 18,000 people were without power over the weekend.

"That's from Ballarat to Bacchus Marsh to Daylesford, Maryborough and down to Meredith."

Hundreds of homes in the region remained disconnected last night including about 200 in Ballarat, 100 in Daylesford and 50 in Myrniong.

Mr Armstrong said many large trees had fallen on power lines and had caused extensive damage.

He said Powercor staff had worked through the weekend to restore power to households but accessing damaged power lines had been difficult.

"Access has been one of the main challenges, in particular getting into rural areas, through floods and over soft ground," he said.

More than 5000 homes in the Ballarat and Daylesford regions were without power on Saturday afternoon after storms caused trees to fall on power lines.

Powercor reported trees had come down on power lines near Clarkes Hill about 3.15pm.

Almost 7000 customers in the Ballarat region lost power due to the storms on Saturday.

Radio and television transmissions were also cut to Ballarat over the weekend as the storms wrought havoc for broadcasters.

Commercial stations, SBS and the ABC were unavailable in Ballarat from Saturday afternoon. In an update on its website, ABC Ballarat reported storm activity had affected a transmission facility which broadcasts ABC1, ABC2,

Southern Cross, Prime and SBS television signals.

ABC transmission spokesman Adrian Potter said the Lookout Hill transmission facility in Ballarat was one of the worst affected in Victoria.

Football followers were hurt with Southern Cross and Prime out during parts of the AFL finals broadcasts.

I cannot believe how vulnerable our communications system has proved to be. That almost all radio and television can be out of operation at a time when they are most needed to keep people informed beggars belief. I would have expected there to always be a contingency alternative. How much of Australia is similarly vulnerable? I can certainly think of national security events which could arise now that it's public knowledge how susceptible we are to well directed sabotage.

Well done to the workers of Power Core, who were flat out repairing the faults caused by the weekends weather. It is well overdue for the community to praise all of their efforts and to the wonderful people who work for the SES. they are our forgotten heroes. I hope those people that were affected by the floods are all ok.

How can it be that we still have trees falling on our power lines, didn't the state just spend a large amount of money to make this essential service safer.

WIN Television advises that analogue transmission services have been restored to viewers in the Ballarat, Ararat, Stawell, Camperdown, Terang, Colac and Warrnambool regions. Analogue services for all free-to-air networks were cut on Saturday due to flooding and loss of power at the Mount Cole transmission site. Following the extensive damage from the storm, the reserve on-site generator was unable to operate. A new generator was brought in to restore power to the site and transmission was restored just before 11.30am.
