ALFREDTON motorists have been promised some relief from Sturt St traffic woes by Christmas.
Works on the first stage of roadworks on Sturt St west of the Arch of Victory, which includes the re-sealing of the west-bound lanes, are to be completed by the end of the year.
But residents will have to wait some time longer for a permanent roundabout at the intersection of Learmonth St and Sturt St.
Those works are not scheduled to start until 2011.
The company behind the works, Integra, began work on the duplication and associated roadworks a year ago.
Works stopped on the project in August, but started again last month.
Last month, residents and traders told The Courier of their frustrations about the changed traffic conditions on the road.
Integra managing director Andre Agterhuis said the delays were due to a combination of wet weather and design changes to the project.
"But with agreement from the other project partners work should be completed by Christmas," Mr Agterhuis said.
VicRoads managing director Lance Midgely said the authority, which is responsible for the road, was pleased works would be completed by Christmas.
Ballarat Mayor Judy Verlin said the Alfredton residents had endured a tough few months.
"Access on and off Sturt St has been difficult and I have had quite a few calls from angry residents and traders asking council to step in and get this mess fixed," Cr Verlin said.
"All of the works have been designed ultimately to improve traffic safety, reduce traffic congestion and restore the Avenue of Honour to its original intent - a consistent row of evenly spaced trees."
