THIS year’s Royal South Street competitors hit the right note yesterday, as the Choral Contest continued at Ballarat’s Her Majesty’s Theatre.
More than 100 choirs will take part in the three-day section. Adjudicator Mr Bill Simmons is overseeing the proceedings.
Choral chairman Michael Stewart said competition had been very strong in this year’s group.
“There have been some of the best choirs from around the state taking part.
“We have been thrilled with the level of quality from each of the performances and from those who took part in the masterclass in the theatre,” he said.
Competitors travelled from as far as Warragul, Bendigo, Geelong and Melbourne.

Mr Stewart said a particular drawcard in the competition was the 2009 Australian Choir of the Year, the Bendigo Youth Choir, directed by Mrs Valerie Broad.
“This choir is entered in two of the more prestigious sections of the competitions, the Young Prize and the City of Ballarat Prize,” Mr Stewart said.
Audience members joined teachers, family and friends at the historic theatre.
