The bus made a u-turn at Bullengarook, about 15 kilometres from Bacchus Marsh, when the driver reportedly heard a loud pop from the rear of the bus.

Bacchus Marsh Acting Sergeant Brian Anderson said smoke billowed from the back of the bus and the 14 students were immediately evacuated.

''It was a fault with the bus it seems. It is burnt to the ground,'' he said.

Police closed the road while the CFA controlled the blaze.

Eight fire trucks responded from the surrounding area and took 40 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The surrounding grass also caught fire.

A replacement bus arrived within an hour to transport the students to school.

My name is Jackie, and i usually catch this bus! Luckily i missed it this morning! I have seen pictures of the burnt out bus and heard about what happened from the other people on there and to say the least IM TOTALLY SHOCKED!!! i can only imagine how scary that would have been. Its good that nobody was hurt. When i heard that the engine exploded i just imagined a small puff of smoke and then the news arrived at the school!

A friend of mine is a mechanic. He has encountered a similar problem and discovered after the bus had been repaired a faluty brake adjuster which he discovered was the problem. In combination with alminium wheels which are not standard. These wheels transfer the heat from the brakes to the tyres and as a result, if one tyre on a driving wheels explodes because of excess heat, it can go unnoticed and cause extra heat because of friction with the road.

I was one of the students on the bus. I would just like to thank our driver, Di, for safely getting us away from the bus. she did an amazing job looking after us. I'd also like to thank all the emergency workers that helped today. Also the other students were great. Good on Ryan for trying to put it out. :)
