Superpipe makes its way to town

30/03/2008 9:33:18 PM

IT'S just three months until the Goldfields Superpipe's Ballarat link is switched on.

The $180 million link is planned for completion at the end of June, and is currently 90 percent complete, after nine months of construction.

The 86km controversial pipeline from Bendigo to Ballarat is hailed to provide a secure water supply for the region, with Ballarat's water storages at a mere 8.7 percent.

The project's Goulburn-Campaspe link was completed in September, connecting Bendigo's water supply to the Goulburn system.

The Ballarat link will connect to the Goulburn system via the pipeline which will extend from Bendigo's Sandhurst Reservoir to White Swan Reservoir.

While Lake Eildon's storages lie at 15.19 percent, with

506,376ML remaining, CHW chairman John Barnes assured Ballarat residents in November there would be water to flow through the pipe.

The authority says initial water diversions will be up to five gigalitres in the first year, and could increase to 18 gigalitres over 50 years.

The water supply will add up to 55 megalitres of water per day to the region's water storages.

So far, the majority of the pipeline has been laid, with work progressing on the project's three pump stations.

CHW managing director Neil Brennan said the authority was thrilled the project was on schedule, from a construction point of view.

Victorian company CCB Envico is expected to complete the construction of the three pump stations and tanks, located at Sandhurst Reservoir, Yandoit and Blampied by mid year.
