TEAM Type One — Sanofi is a world-class cycling team with some members having diabetes.
Last night, team members took time out of the gruelling 550-kilometre Jayco Herald Sun Tour to meet with Ballarat diabetics at St Patrick's College's Old Collegian's Pavilion.
Based in America, the 21-man team includes two Australians, Fabio Calabria from Canberra and Ben King from Perth.
Calabria — the reigning Australian road-cycling sprint champion — has had type one diabetes since he was 13 and uses high-tech equipment to monitor his blood glucose levels and insulin requirements while cycling.
"We hope to reach out to Australians affected by type-one diabetes and help them recognise that, with the right diet, exercise, treatment and technology, they can achieve whatever they set their mind to," Calabria said.
Diabetes Education to Assist diabetes educator Sheree Rennie said the chance to meet Team Type One was a great opportunity for the Ballarat community.
"It was a great chance to come and be inspired and learn more about type-one diabetes and active lifestyles from peers with diabetes who manage busy lifestyles and the challenges surrounding exercise," Ms Rennie said.
The event was hosted by Melbourne-based charity, HypoActive, which aims to inspire the type one community to live a more physically active life.
