A 17-YEAR-OLD youth who allegedly led police on a high-speed car chase during which he narrowly missed hitting Buninyong CFA members yesterday applied for bail.
A Children's Court heard the teenager was serving a youth attendance order when he stole a car from a Porter St address in Ballarat on Saturday evening, before driving to Geelong with his girlfriend as a passenger.
Ballarat Police Senior Constable Cameron Mcrae said the youth was driving back to Ballarat after drinking alcohol when he drove into a closed gate at Meredith.
The court heard the car then crashed into a bus on the premises, before the pair fled on foot then returned to the car and drove off.
Police were alerted by a nearby resident who heard a crash.
Sen Const Mcrae said the youth passed a police car in Buninyong and immediately accelerated reaching speeds of more that 120kmh in a 60kmh zone.
He then allegedly drove across a dividing strip and clipped a tree before heading north along the service lane to Learmonth St.
Sen Const Mcrae said the youth drove into the driveway of Buninyong fire station, narrowly missing CFA members.
"Several CFA members were forced to move out of the way to avoid being injured," he said.
"He missed them probably by less than two metres."
The chase came to an end when the youth drove into a dirt embankment at the back of the fire station, the court heard.
Sen Const Mcrae said the youth had never held a licence and recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.023.
The youth's mother told the court she could not control her son, but he had "settled down" over the past month and had stopped using cannabis. She also said her son's girlfriend who had been in the car with him had been a
stabilising influence.
The youth faces 14 charges including aggravated burglary, driving in a manner dangerous and drink driving.
Police opposed bail arguing the youth was an unacceptable risk of re-offending and endangering the safety and welfare of the public.
The bail application was adjourned part-heard until tomorrow.
