A FAMILY who lost their Gordon home in a fire last month has thanked the community for their huge generosity.
The fire on June 21 destroyed a home which had been "a place where the family came to get back on their feet", they said.
The home was owned by a 77-year-old grandmother of 62, whose husband died only eight months ago.
Her grand-daughter Rochelle Wilson and her husband Adam had been living with her at the Mills Rd property.
Mr Wilson was the sole occupant at the time, and received severe burns to his back.
He said the fire was caused by a powerpoint electrical fault.
"I'd fallen asleep on the floor and woke up to loud noises, which was when I saw the flames and smoke," Mr Wilson recalled.
Outside the home, he waited while six fire crews extinguished the blaze, leaving nothing but ashes.
The couple said Moorabool Shire Council immediately responded, with donations to help them get back on their feet.
Their neighbours, the Red Cross and Salvation Army also gave support.
Mr Wilson gave a big thanks to Ballarat Health Services, who treated him with his burns.
"When things like this happen, it's really humbling for us because we prefer to give help rather than receive it," he said.
"There's always other people out there who are worse off than us."
