'That ad' hits TV this week

06 Jul, 2009 12:51 AM
A SERIES of Victoria Bitter commercials filmed in Ballarat in a two-day shoot in May will air on Wednesday to coincide with the first day of the Ashes.

About 1500 Ballarat extras turned out to take part in the massive shoot, which featured numerous celebrities including Michael Clarke, Wally Lewis, Michael Klim, Molly Meldrum and Peter Russell-Clarke.

Lydiard St was closed off and groups of people marched in parade formation behind irreverent banners such as "People who dream of chucking it all in" and "Men who won't eat quiche".

VB national marketing manager Paul Donaldson yesterday said 10 different advertisements had been produced from the shoot.

"They're all varying lengths; they range from two minutes to 15 seconds," he said.

Mr Donaldson said six of the advertisments were expected to air on television while all of the advertisements could be seen online.

"If they (extras) jump online from Wednesday, they will be able to spot themselves in all the different versions."

The advertisements also feature Ballarat's iconic buildings and streetscapes.

"The town looks unbelievable, there's some big beautiful shots of the town," Mr Donaldson said.

He said Ballarat was chosen as the location for the shoot because the locals were "real and genuine".

"It's everything we hope for and more - the people were absolutely wonderful."

Fox Sports and 3AW broadcaster Dwayne Russell is one of two voices which will be heard on the advertisements.

A special screening of the commercials will be held in Ballarat on Thursday night.

Is it me or is Ballarat going backwards rather than forwards? I thought alcohol ads were no longer allowed but on the other hand maybe they will bring back ads for cigarettes? If everyone was serious about alcohol and smoking then why not just cut both out all together? Oh but wait Ballarat will always be there to bring it on back now won't it?

Your link is tenuous at best. Suppose it would have been better if the ad was shot overseas and locals earned no money dressing up, which in reality is all they did. Ballarat is moving forwards, they were offered an opportunity to have some fun with a commercial which will undoubtedly feature some landmarks of regional Victoria and the town saw the positive. Maybe its you, ex resident, who is looking at it from a backwards perspective. As a nation that allows sex ads in local papers, I find this a trivial matter in comparison.

While it's great to have the commercial filmed locally, there would have been plenty of VB drinking bogans in Ballarat, hence the reason they picked the town to film in.

To ex resident, I couldn't agree more. What kind of message does this send to our young people, especially when most of the violent crime is linked to alcohol. No Ballarat isn't going backward, the whole bloody country is back to front. The lucky country? I don't think so!

To me this has nothing to do with what the ad is promoting, this is a boost to the city. Our beautiful and historic city (which I recently moved to) is a grand setting for advertisements, movies and TV series. It brings revenue to the area which keeps money in our pockets. PS. Ex resident, the TV as well as many other media forms are still allowed as only rule being that they contain the drink responsibly logo. I'm 22 and just because I see an ad filmed in Ballarat doesn't make me want to drink? Did I run out and buy a Ford ute when they filmed an ad here featuring guys showering in a beer fountain? NOPE!

To Linda, if you dont like this country, shift. It's not rocket science. We live in the best country in the world. People need to take responsibility for themselves and stop blaming everybody else for their mistakes. It's just a advertisement!

I totally agree with George and Leigh. I am 18 and I think that this is a good investment for Ballarat, to show others our town, our landscape and maybe it will bring more tourists into town. Have you seen all the population running around with VBs in their hands? I think not. Linda, move away from this country. Ex resident, if you don't like Ballarat so much, why are you still reading our paper?
