The sooner the better: council calls for new report on costings

10 Mar, 2010 11:24 PM
BALLARAT City Council officers have been asked to provide updated reports on the future of Lake Wendouree.

At a Ballarat City Council meeting on Wednesday night, councillor Samantha McIntosh called for officers to produce updated costings on the lake's economic benefits, particularly focusing on tourism, the cost of refilling the lake and the shortest possible timeframe to do it.

"Refilling the lake by 2014 is not quick enough. I want to quantify and clarify whether filling the lake in a shorter period of time is feasible, realistic and viable. If there is evidence that refilling the lake quickly is feasible, I welcome fair debate on the issue," she said.

"I commend the people of Ballarat for their passion for the lake and in wanting to find a solution, as the council does.

"There are already a number of measures in place to ensure the long-term viability of the lake, but we must not compromise the city's supply of drinking water to refill it. The security of our drinking water must not be threatened," Cr McIntosh said.

Fine, fill the lake but not with water from murray river system. Go back onto stage four water restriction and use that saved water. give irrigators a living.

This is the culmination of FAILURE by CHW and Labor to adequately capture and supply water as a basic need that goes back a decade or more. We shouldn't be having a discussion about filling the lake...it should be being filled by the Gong/Kirks as it always was until CHW cut if off in 2002. They have used 'below average rainfall' as a scapegoat for their own non action and failure to plan when we were overdrawing at least a decade ago...while they DID nothing. We also shouldn't be stealing from the Goulburn with the ridiculous Stupidpipe in the FIRST place. There was no need to do so had CHW been competent, forward planned, harvested properly and not mismanaged our supply for the last decade +. The emphasis is now placed on addressing the resultant and accepting it as inevitable whilst none is placed on the process/reasons by which we got to this disgraceful point....and apportioning legitimate blame to address that fact. CHW ( and Labor) continue to hoodwink this community...and the community allows it to do so. Wake up Ballarat.
