THIRD TIME UNLUCKY: A man douses the flames with water from a small tanker on the back of a 4WD after firefighting tankers were unable to gain access to the fire at Lake Wendouree.

A FIRE at Lake Wendouree has flared up for the third time in a month.Country Fire Authority units attended the scene about 6.50pm yesterday after smoke was seen billowing from the site of a fire that burned last week.Tankers were unable to access the fire and water had to be carried out in four-wheel-drives to douse the smoldering flames.Crews handed the scene back to Ballarat City Council at 7.15pm after the fire was extinguished.Ballarat City Fire Station leading firefighter Steve Kelly said it was a reignition of the existing fire that started a few days ago."You put the fire out and it goes down into the sub-ground."With the wind conditions and dry weather it can reignite and pop back up," he explained."Council is patrolling it and will be keeping an eye on it over the next three to four days, especially with the predicted weather conditions."Scorching weather conditions are expected in Ballarat for the next few days, with temperatures soaring to the high 30Cs.Leading firefighter Kelly said he was not concerned about the conditions affecting the state of the lake."The perimeter is controlled. There are just certain hot spots in the middle that could fire up with the wrong weather conditions," he said.Wendouree Pde resident Margaret Spencer lives on the north side of the lake, near the recent fires, but said her concern was for the firefighters."The resources should be used elsewhere, not at some fire on a lake," she said. The first fire on the lake occurred on December 29 and was caused by a test burn on the fairy grass. The lake burned for a second time last Wednesday.Today is a total fire ban.
