Tributes flow for Ballarat identity Nick Marios

Tributes flow for Ballarat identity Nick Marios

31 Jul, 2010 01:32 AM
NICK Marios was a big man: big in size, status and presence.

This is how community members described the Ballarat restaurateur and identity, who died at his Nerrina home yesterday morning after a suspected heart attack.

The death of Mr Marios, owner of the successful cafe-delicatessen The Olive Grove and pizzeria Nick's, has shocked and saddened the community.

Carl Casella said his friend of 20 years was very passionate about his family, business and Ballarat.

"He was a great ambassador for Ballarat as he travelled the world, and represented Ballarat very well," Mr Casella said.

"He was a big person: big in size, big in status and had a big presence. Everyone knew him. He was a perfectionist. His success shows in his family and business.

"He worked hard and also played hard. Those who played with him would know."

Outside his restaurant ventures, Mr Marios had a passion for motorbikes and shooting.

He was a member of the Ballarat Pistol Club, Ballarat Rovers Motorcycle Club and Ballarat Motorcycle Touring Club.

"Nick had a passion for motorcycling. He enjoyed the sport side, but favoured the touring side. He got a lot of pleasure out of it. He enjoyed life to the fullest," Mr Casella said.

Ballarat Pistol Club member Graham Taylor said Mr Marios, whom he knew for four years, was always a very colourful person.

"He was always a character. He liked to stand out, (be) centre of attention and told a good story," Mr Taylor said.

"He loved his western action, which he used in competition. He used to wear the full western outfit ... he will be very sadly missed."

Mr Marios loved rockth'nthroll music and had an impressive display of memorabilia from that era.

Piano rocker Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley's original guitarist Gary Burton were among his list of mates and his connections saw him invited to Sun Records' 50th anniversary, held in the Gibson Guitar Lounge

in Memphis.

"He had a great passion for America. He loved the people, but his heart always belonged to Ballarat," Mr Casella said.

He said Mr Marios would be sadly missed by the Ballarat community.

"He was a wonderful person, a very generous person.

"He has died 60 years young."

Mr Marios is survived by his wife Vicky and children Peter, Deanna, Alethea and Alexandra.

Our son is married to Nick's Daughter Deanna. We are overseas on holidays and shocked by our Son's sad telephone call. Nick shared a beautiful Grandaughter with us and his pride in her made us so happy. Those who know Nick will know of his love for his family. That love was extended to our son as part of his family. Nick, we salute and thank you for your lovely daughter, our beautiful grandaughter and for being Travis's friend. Cheers, The Bombers did it for you against the Saints. Thank you for many welcomes at the Olive Grove.

To Dear Vicky, may I say how saddened I am to hear of the passing of Nick. I will always have great memories of our wonderful conversations; from our mutual love of music, cars, food, wine and yes.. even Elvis! We had many a long night at the Canopy Club; me playing the music, (most of which he hated, unless it was The Big O or The King!) and Big Nick keeping us all safe!.."LITTLE THINGS I SHOULD HAVE SAID AND DONE, I JUST NEVER TOOK THE TIME..YOU WERE ALWAYS ON MY MIND; YOU WERE ALWAYS ON MY MIND" It is with a very heavy heart, here in Perth, I am be thinking of you and your beautiful family, of which Nick was most proud. May God bless you all.

In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of ev'ry glove that layed him down Or cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains The days of the Canopy Club, storming the walls of Kryal Castle, flights to Sydney for hamburgers, non-sensical texts at 3am, the might bombers and plenty of philosophical debates - an ordinary man who lived an extraordinary life - sadly missed. Condolences to Vicki and family - Geoff Alway

RIP BIG NICK!!!! Deepest sympathies passed on from the Cosgrave Family to the Marios Family at this awful and tragic time. Will miss the many stories you would tell us about all your adventures, here and overseas, you always managed to make us have a good laugh over coffee and lunch. Best wishes and deepest sympathies. The Olive Grove will not be the same without you. But your memory and memorabilia will always remain.

So hard to believe you are gone Nick and that we wont ever see that big grin of yours again as we share a glass of wine, a laugh and a good chat while lisening to stories of your latest adventures. Somehow though, we feel you will always be with your many friends, and we will still be able to see you in each and every one of the beautiful family you have left behind to follow in your footsteps. Our thoughts are with all those you have loved. Athalie and Luigi Bazzani

To Vicky, Peter, Deanna, Alethea and Alex. I am deeply saddened and shocked at the sudden passing of Nick. Memories of all the good times we have all had together have been flooding back. I will be thinking about those times and all of you during this sad time. I surely cannot forget Dicky Bolton during this time either. Chins up everyone. Mark.
