Truck driver escapes injury

27 Apr, 2005 11:32 PM
A TIP-TRUCK driver is lucky to be alive after his trailer made contact with high voltage powerlines in Dean yesterday.

The truck came in contact with the powerlines at 12.39pm, cutting power to 3260 Powercor customers in Dean, Ballarat North and Daylesford.

Powercor spokesman Damien Batey said the truck driver "can consider himself lucky".

"If everyone in the community is more aware of powerlines we can help prevent accidents and fatalities," Mr Batey said.

He said while the driver survived unscathed, the incident should serve as a reminder of the dangers of working near high-voltage electricity.

Mr Batey said there had been at least four preventable incidents in country Victoria this year which could have resulted in serious injury or death.

"Fortunately no-one's been killed in these accidents," Mr Batey said.

Powercor wants to emphasise the "look up and live" message, particularly for farmers and contractors working by themselves in remote areas.

"Farmers and contractors working alone, they must have a spotter working with them," Mr Batey said.

The blackout yesterday affected businesses and residents in a wide area for more than an hour.

Mr Batey said power was restored to most customers at 1.47pm.

"There was a pocket of about 20 customers who had to wait an extra hour," Mr Batey said.

Powercor had estimated it would take four hours to repair the damage. The early estimate was published on Powercor's website, which provides updates on power outages across Australia.

Mr Batey said while people in a blackout could not access the Internet, he encouraged them to try and contact people who could.

He said information was also updated on Powercor's service faults and difficulties hotline "in most cases".

"We endeavour to have up to date information for any outage," Mr Batey said.
