University of Ballarat funding may be slashed: VTA

05 Feb, 2012 11:30 PM
COURSE closures and staff redundancies at the University of Ballarat could be consequences of possible government funding cuts, the Victorian TAFE Association (VTA) says.

The VTA claims the government is considering a recommendation, following a recent Essential Services Commission review, which could see cuts of $230 million from TAFE over the next four years.

It says $65 million in funding could be directly slashed from regional Victorian institutions.

David Williams, executive director of the VTA, said University of Ballarat TAFEs at Ballarat, Horsham, Stawell and Ararat were unlikely to close if the recommendation was followed, but said it could have other significant effects.

“What you might find is there might be fewer courses offered at some of those campuses,” Mr Williams said.

“You are talking $7 million over four years, it is a fair amount of money and Ballarat is a bit larger in size. You are looking at at least $7 million, maybe $8 million over that four years.

“At Ballarat, the TAFE division of the university might be running 200 programs, well 20-30 of those could become unviable.”

Minister for Higher Education and Skills Peter Hall described the VTA’s action as “mischievous scaremongering”

“They are picking up on one of about 40 recommendations made by the Essential Services Commission into the review of fees and funding,” he said.

Mr Hall said it was unfair to single out one recommendation when the government hadn’t yet responded to the report, and that it was poor timing by the VTA, which is trying to maximise enrolments.

“If somebody believes funding is going to be cut it could be counter-productive and they could decide to enrol somewhere else,” Mr Hall said. University of Ballarat Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Andy Smith said UB was expanding through its partnerships with other regional TAFE institutes throughout Victoria.

“In addition, we are constructing a new Manufacturing Technology Training Centre at our SMB Campus,” Professor Smith said.

“All of these developments indicate a strong future for TAFE programs at the University of Ballarat.”

You need to make it clearer which government is making the cuts. For the record, its the state government.

Instead of crying poor, the Uni should perhaps look at actually using all the buildings it has now instead of wasting money on new ones.

It will be interesting to see what services at the University improve this year that they are slugging students with compulsory $250 union fees again.

What is the Liberal party's problem with access to education? I fully support being accountable and making viable decisions but it seems to be a never ending cycle. Liberals elected to power and slash education funding. Labour is restored to power and increases education funding. But how much time and money is wasted on this cycle? Does the Liberal party actually have a viable and logical reason as to why they keep slashing education?

Yes but don't wait for them to go public with it.

This University sent letters in December to students who had "not reached the standard" in end of year exams. Giving them SEVEN DAYS to give reasons as to why they should not be removed or suspended.

It is February enrollments are now taking place and these students have not yet been advised if they are reprieved or fired.

Should these students have looked for a job?

Why fund a place with such thoughtless, discourteous rulers?

Fj identifies a key problem for UB: the FEDERAL gov't has given UB tens of millions for buildings but the STATE gov't is cutting funding for TAFE students. So we will have lots of empty new buildings but no students and ordinary workers miss out again thanks to the Melbourne toffs. Workers of the world unite!
