FLORISTS went on red alert yesterday as the most romantic day on the calendar brought out Ballarat's lovers.Romantic gestures abounded, leaving many of the city's florists with rose-coloured tales to tell.Stems Flower Market owner Michael Harris said the day had shown him there were some romantic blokes out there."One of our customers bought a bouquet of 10 dozen 80cm red roses which equates to 120 roses," Mr Harris said."This was 10 dozen for their 10-year anniversary - a dozen for each year."Mr Harris said red roses were the favourite of the day, and estimates his shop sold about 600 bunches.Other colours of roses were also popular - some wanted bouquets made up of red roses with one white rose for a mistake they had made. The team at Fiori Arte were up all night selling flowers. Boxed arrangements proved popular."Teddies have also walked out the door," Fiori Arte manager Michelle Cane said. The store sold two teddies with ring containers in them, for a couple of customers who were hoping to make this Valentine's Day extra special with a proposal. The most romantic tale of the day came from florists Flowers with Class.Melissa White, an emergency nurse at Ballarat Health Services Base Hospital, went to work yesterday for a typical afternoon shift. At 2pm a one-metre-tall martini glass filled with her favourite flowers arrived from her husband Andrew White."Considering he proposed to me in the shed, this is a very romantic gesture," Mrs White said. Not usually one to send flowers, Mrs White's husband of three years got the idea from a friend's wedding they attended the week before."We were at the wedding and I commented on how beautiful the flower arrangements were on the tables," she said.Flowers with Class owner Laura Verhagen happened to be sitting at the same table. The flowers help celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the couple's first meeting."It's made it a lovely day, despite the fact it's been so busy at work," Mrs White said.
