CR DAVID Vendy is set to secure his sixth mayoral term after Cr Wayne Rigg last night ruled out a late mayoral challenge.
Since Cr Vendy was elected mayor in an informal ballot last Friday, a number of councillors have voiced their dissatisfaction at his dominance of the top job.
As he has yet to be officially sworn in, there has been a push for newly elected deputy mayor Wayne Rigg to re-challenge Cr Vendy.
Crs Des Hudson, Cr Geoff Hayes and Cr Peter Innes have all said they would support Cr Rigg in a fresh challenge.
However, Cr Rigg yesterday ruled out a challenge.
"As tempting as it is to mount a challenge, I have decided that for the sake of the council going forward, I will honour the informal ballot that took place last Friday," Cr Rigg said.
"The suggestion of a challenge to David (Vendy) did not come from me.
"The opportunity to elect me as mayor was last Friday night, and I wasn't successful," he said.
However, Cr Rigg warned Cr Vendy that he needed to change his mayoral style in order to stave off increasing dissatisfaction from his colleagues.
"Robust debate is needed to ensure the correct decisions are made for the city and its residents, however, there also needs to be trust and respect, which under David's mayorality has fallen to all time lows," Cr Rigg said.
"This is an opportunity for David to be inclusive of all councillors and realise that decisions for this city are not made by one person.
"We, as a council, should use this as a wake-up call to start with a clean slate and work together into the future," he said.
Cr Vendy yesterday said he fully expected to be endorsed as mayor at next Monday's meeting.
"I will send out the invitations and I don't expect a late challenge," he said.
