BRITISH information technology firm Vertex remains in negotiations to open its Ballarat customer service centre despite a lengthy delay in the opening date.
The Courier has been told the company may be negotiating to set up its centre in a former Bunnings Warehouse near the Wendouree Homemaker Centre.
Vertex Australia was due to set up the Ballarat operation in September, creating 600 new jobs in the region.
Late last month Vertex and the state government announced the company would establish its Asia Pacific headquarters in East Bentleigh, Melbourne.
Earlier this week the company confirmed the centre's launch would be delayed until December or January.
Ballarat City Council chief executive officer Anthony Schinck said the centre was expected to proceed as planned, despite the setback in its opening date.
''There's no indication that simply because of an issue of timing that their investment in Ballarat is under risk,'' he said.
Mr Schinck said council staff had met with Vertex executives over a ``long period of time'', but he would not reveal the location of the proposed new centre.
Colliers International Ballarat director Andrew Lewis said negotiations were progressing well with Vertex to establish its site in Ballarat.
''We're in negotiations with Vertex, we just can't confirm the location of the property,'' he said.
State government spokesman Shaun Inguanzo said Vertex remained committed to opening its centre in Ballarat, but did not explain why its launch had been delayed.
