Visas denied for Nepalese World Youth Day pilgrims

8/07/2008 11:31:00 PM
TWENTY-EIGHT Nepalese pilgrims who were to be hosted by Ballarat North families for World Youth Day have had their visa applications denied.

The pilgrims were originally to stay this week for five days in Ballarat before heading to Sydney to participate in World Youth Day activities.

The visa applications were refused for a number of reasons, including that the pilgrims did not have sufficient family ties in Nepal.

The Immigration Department maintains that like other visa applications, those attending World Youth Day are required to show that they have incentives to return to their home country, such as employment, assets or family ties.

Stacey Aitken of the Ballarat Catholic Diocese said: "We're disappointed that they're not coming."

It is sad that a whole lot of the Nepalese pilgrims were denied entry visa by the Australian Immigration Office. But I think this is right because we in Nepal never know how such opportunities are offered; who selects the participants and who are selected. For a group like youth representatives, I would have expected transparency in such matters. I wonder whether the 25 youth pilgrims were truly youth representatives in a transparent manner and whether they are the true representatives to attend such events. In many situations, people obtaining visa for such events later choose to remain illegally in such countries. I think that is not good. Therefore, in future, the organisers of such events must ensure that their partner organisations in countries like Nepal must adopt public advertised and transparent procedures for announcing such events and selecting the representatives. Then such lost opportunities would not occour. Suresh
