Walkers to go off track

30 Oct, 2005 10:24 PM
PARTS of Lake Wendouree will be closed to walkers and joggers from today as a week of tree maintenance begins.

The work will be carried out by the City of Ballarat's parks and environment team and will involve the use of a special 42-metre high tower.

The sky-high tower will be located in Windmill Dv, Pleasant St Reserve and Hickman St over the next five days.

It will be specifically used by council staff to remove four pine trees, three of which are dying, and one which is structurally weak.

Other works will see the removal of four poplar trees, which have all been identified as dangerous or dying.

The large tower will also allow council staff to prune branches and install cables in several tall pine and poplar trees near the King Edward Rotunda.

For safety reasons, a council spokeswoman said, it would be necessary to close some of the lake's facilities while the tree maintenance program took place.

She said recreational users were encouraged to take care when approaching work sites and were asked to follow all road and footpath diversions.

Wendouree Pde will be closed on Wednesday between the two Windmill Dv entrances, with all traffic diverted along Windmill Dv.

Meanwhile, the original Apex playground at Windmill Dv and the King Edward Rotunda will be closed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Walking paths will also be diverted at various times during the week.

The council identified the dangerous trees while carrying out a tree audit earlier this year.
