Wendouree lake costs to be made public

22 Feb, 2012 11:35 PM
BALLARAT residents will know the full cost of works to restore Lake Wendouree, after a report was sought by Ballarat City Council last night.

Following a request from Cr Samantha McIntosh at a meeting of the council, officers will prepare a report detailing the cost of works to dredge the lake, install buoying systems, remove weeds and reinstate water levels following the drought.

Cr McIntosh said the financial summary would answer questions being asked of the council by the community.

“It is full of water, looking spectacular and the lake is buzzing before the Head of the Lake competition,” she said.

“It would be helpful to receive an update on costs involved with the lake to date, so we can see exactly where we are at with all the questions coming in from the community.”

The report will be presented to councillors and is expected to be made public at the next meeting, to be held on March 14.

Former Ballarat mayor Cr Craig Fletcher sought more information on the time period the report would cover, before supporting a motion to outline the cost of all works since the lake was dry.

The move follows controversy surrounding the lake’s readiness to host the upcoming Head of the Lake rowing competition and the 2014 Australian Rowing Masters series.

This month, The Courier revealed that water was being pumped into Lake Wendouree to ensure it was full for the March 4 regatta, after high winds and low rainfall caused it to be 260 millimetres below full.

The City of Ballarat recently purchased a $480,000 lake weed harvester for periodic maintenance works.

Last week, leaked documents showed that contractors working on the rowing course had objected to an international consultant being brought in by council officers and Rowing Australia to advise on the rowing course.

Is this the full cost of both cutting weed and building the plant to recycle waste water plus any recurring projected costs of weed cutting etc.?Seems there has been some poor advise given to councillors by a few senior advisors in the Town Hall over the last few years and unnfortunately the councillors have chosen to believe what they've been told.Time to start culling a few advisors not the weed.

And hopefully they can reply with how much the rowers have contributed to this lake for their own enjoyment.............. Spend the same amount of $$$'s at Learmonth and Burrumbeet.

May I suggest that the ratepayers place a cushion on the floor between their feet. This might save their jaw from breaking when it drops, after you are told the amount being spent on the swamp.

Why is it necessary for Councillors to ask for cost reports? Mandatory financial reports should be presented to Council regularly.

Surely the CEO gets regular project costs from his staff. Certainly Councillors should be given reports regularly. If this isn't happening then no wonder we have regular dramas!

Is the lake being dredged? Funny because the big yellow dredge in the lake has not moved for weeks.

It will be nice to see how much we are paying for these things to sit idle for weeks at a time!!

Wasnt dredging supposed to have been finished by June last year. Thats right the dredge they got was not able to operate on a full lake. Solution lets drain some water. Damn now we have to put more back in again becuase shock horror its summer and water evaporates in the summer :)

To think the council could of had deepening done for nothing when it was empty. Chimps could do a better job!

Please extend the scope of the report councillor to include: 1) what percentage of the dollars were properly tendered, 2) how many breaches of the council procurement policy occurred, 3) how many breaches of the local govt act occurred, 4) what percentage of the dollars did not go to local suppliers. Careful what you ask for councillors.

I agree with learmonth bloke. How much do these rowers contribute? after all they use it as a plaything for the rich and famous of Ballarat and their rowing 'regattas' I believe the costs will be astonishing and a blight on our city's finances for a privileged few.

How many people or "chimps" as Matt so adequately stated, does it take to make a logical decision?

A key reminder that a common word "THINK" unfortunately not so commonly used, is forgotten about.

These poor decisions ends up costing the community, through rates and in future rate increases.
