WOMBAT State Forest has been ruled out as a potential logging site, said the Department of Sustainability and Environment. DSE spokesman Jude Niemiec said that the forest would "definitely not'' be subject to any logging, despite the western region being marked as a future site.Environment minister Gavin Jennings announced this week that logging would be introduced across western Victoria, due to the lack of supply after recent bushfires in the state.Mr Jennings said the amount of logging would not increase, although the area covered will expand."We might just have to spread the load across areas of the state forest a little broader,'' he said.Conservation groups are sceptical and unsatisfied by promises the forest would not be affected. But Wombat Forestcare convenor Murray Ralph, remained doubtful."They (the DSE) can say that now, that we're not going to be affected," Mr Ralph said. "It may be the line before the election but it can all change afterwards. "I'm really angry about it. We didn't hear a word from the government."Greens candidate for the Western Victoria Upper House eregion Marcus Ward said the announcement that was subtly posted on the DSE website makes everybody's hard work obsolete."It's total betrayal. In a sleazy backroom deal, it's all out the window," he said.Logging ceased in Wombat Forest four years ago.
