Ballarat's 3BA fireworks spectacular goes off with a bang

27 Jan, 2012 03:16 PM

BALLARAT twins Ebony and Hayley Ware, 7, perfectly summed up last night’s 3BA Skyworks Spectacular – “they were really colourful and really big”.

The girls were two of the thousands who gathered at Lake Wendouree last night for the annual Australia Day fireworks, which were held up nearly 30 minutes by strong winds after early concerns they may not go ahead at all.

Rugs and warm clothing were also the order of the day as the temperature dropped sharply in the lead-up to the event.

But the blowy, chilly conditions were forgotten about 9.45pm as fireworks in all colours of the rainbow, and even animal shapes and smiley faces, delighted the crowd, ending in a spectacular crescendo of colour.

Ballarat brother and sister, Hailee, 7, and Brodie, 4, Pring were among those enthralled by the display.

“I liked the rabbit,” Brodie said.

“And I liked the end,” Hailee said.

The fireworks were coordinated by Adelaide pyrotechnics expert Robert Balfour, who used special Japanese and ghost shells in his 15th show in Ballarat.

Ballarat’s Australia Day celebrations kicked off at 5pm with family entertainment on the lake foreshore provided by the City of Ballarat Municipal Brass Band, Mister Whiskers and the Sweet Monas.

Traditional aboriginal didgeridoo and guitar music group Western Creation and Melbourne-based Prayer Babies, who play original country-tinged music, also kept the crowd tapping along.

Ballarat mayor Mark Harris said the celebrations were really successful.

“There were a lot of family groups,” Cr Harris said.

“It was a bit chilly with some high winds, and I was starting to get nervous it wasn’t going ahead at all, but when they did they were absolutely brilliant.

“The whole day went very well.

“There was something in it for everyone.”

Ballarat Police said the crowd was well behaved, with only a few minor incidents occurring throughout the evening.

Typical Ballarat freezing weather which took the edge off the enjoyment but the fireworks when they finally started were really good and you forgot how cold it was.

I would love to get the group of young blokes back to the eastern side of the lake today to pick up their broken bottles that the big fat one crushed into the grass, and then send his commando rolling mate in the water to remove their rubbish.

"AWESOME!" was how my kids summed it up.

Thanks 3BA.

There's a big difference between "spectacular" and noise. I live 25klms from Ballarat in a low-lying hilly and forested area and I could hear the fireworks in a bedroom with closed windows.

It frightened the life out of me until I realised what I was listening to, so I can only imagine how the poor dogs and other animals reacted!!

Police only had a few minor incidents ? really the underage drinking around the kids playground was disgusting, and again for the second in a row an alcohol fueled teenage fight erupted near the BBQ.

Where were the police? well not around that area, the police need to spend more time on foot around the kids playground to discourage such behavior.

Minor incidents smarter policing would have made a much better event.

Always a great display. I am pleased with not having to teach my children any expletives now as they have been taught them all from being in the supposed family area - filled with foul mouthed entoxicated 13 year olds. Also minmal toilets enhanced with the choice of the ones without paper or the ones with empty cask bladders and vomit on the seats - choices choices!

Police present was outstanding around the playground area, bag searches were taking place and they were doing a really good job with the amount of teenagers they were putting up with.

the fireworks werent as amazing as previous year but i was very impressed with how the police were handling the intense situations.

Great firework display, although it was very cold waiting for them to start! Good job 3BA!

There is always going to be a small group of people/kids that ruin it or misbehave, you get them everywhere. As for all the people who complain about what it does to dogs, Im guessing you dont have kids. I would rather see the enjoyment on little one's faces than worry about dogs! They are animals, you get plenty of warning to lock them up for the night.

What an awesome display of fireworks, thanks 3BA, Mccain an CHW. However what a typical display of drunken youth and lack of entertainment. The alchohol free zone is where I headed with my 5 and 7 year old and there were booze hounds everywhere, litterers and foul mouth toolbags. Where's the respect gone. Gee we all liked to have a drink and fun in public sometimes when we were young, however we had respect, respect for adults and kids and the environment. Sheesh.Go home and tell mummy what you were up to last night.

Thanks 3BA for a great fireworks show, we avoided the lake area for a lot of the reasons above and watched from Black Hill.
