FORGET the grand prix in Spain this weekend, it was the Canadian Lead Primary School billycart race that was the focus of attention for hundreds of onlookers in Ballarat East yesterday.
With a section of Otway Street South blocked off for the event, students had the opportunity to put their machines to the ultimate test.
More than 20 hours work resulted in an extravaganza of design and themes, ranging from The Wiggles' Big Red Car to a Super Mario- inspired racer.
Teacher Sally Gregory said the hours of preparation paid off and the children were thrilled to showcase the skills they had learnt.
"They obviously put a lot of thought into the project, and it taught them far more than just building billycarts," she said.
"The students actually organised the permit to have the road closed, so it taught them how to get involved in organising events as well."
Ryan Dart, 11, clocked the fastest time for the day and was thrilled to reach a speed of 26km/h.
