Could rubber ducks be the answer?

Could rubber ducks be the answer?

17 Mar, 2010 12:35 AM
BALLARAT man Jeff Rowe wants to put all his ducks in a row and all in the name of refilling Lake Wendouree.

Instrumental in raising funds for the construction of the Ballarat Adventure Playground at the lake, Mr Rowe believes he's on a winner with the sponsor-a-duck promotion for the Fill the Lake Campaign.

Mr Rowe has been speaking with campaign organiser Graham Wilkie to have major contributors of $100 and over rewarded with a rubber duck. At the end of the campaign and when the lake was refilled, he said the sponsored

rubber ducks would be released onto the lake and collected over time by visitors to be taken home and "loved".

"What an occasion it would be if we could get 500 rubber ducks released onto the lake after it's refilled," Mr Rowe said.

"The lake has been my baby for a long time. I'm so passionate about it and I would like to see the community get involved in this campaign, whether it be through financial contributions or other means."

Mr Rowe has been involved in tourism for many years, eight with the Ballarat Visitor Information Centre and 41 with the Ballarat Begonia Festival. He was also construction co-ordinator for the popular Ballarat Adventure

Playground, a mecca for hundreds of children and their families each week.

"(Lake Wendouree) has quite a lot to offer and I am amazed at the number of people who still enjoy it every week with barbecues, picnics and playing at the adventure playground.

"But, I believe that most people are disappointed that the lake is not filled. Some locals have even told me they are embarrassed to show the lake to their visitors."

Mr Rowe is looking for someone to donate rubber ducks for the campaign.

Lake Wendouree could fill with one exceptionally good rainy season, but the water wouldn't last long. Because of increasingly hotter and drier conditions, alteration of storm water flows, and excessive groundwater extraction, the expense of keeping the whole lake full is more than most residents would accept. Returning most of the old swamp to lignum and redgum-lined channels and banks would provide excellent bird habitat and a much more natural setting for Monegeti's track. The rowing course and a few other areas could be deepened (as promised years ago) and the rich soil sold to pay for earthworks. The Council already spends too much keeping alive high-rainfall plants like sequoias (and begonias), while Ballarat's beautiful natural assets like Canadian and Creswick forests remain unpromoted and parts are used as rubbish dumps. The climate is changing and sensible humans need to adapt - in Ballarat and globally.

Very well written Richard, unfortunately this has all been said before and who listens - nobody. Its a great plan that you have outlined. A world class rowing course properly lined and deepened and ,exactly my thoughts, River Red gums and natives landscaped into the rest of what once was the lake. This could be one of the most beautiful precincts in the world with a bit of thought and courage.

we could try pie in the sky!it is bad enough the plastic bags without plastic ducks, it is no point putting water in the lake till it has been deepenedand the surface area reduced
