BALLARAT boys Callum Bodey and Dustyn Rodgers share an unusual hobby - raising prizewinning show birds.
After starting at the age of seven, Callum has made an impact with a junior section win at the Ballarat Poultry Society's open show at the Ballarat Showgrounds on Saturday.
Dustyn also walked away with a first-placed ribbon in one of the junior sections, which is open to youngsters aged between six and 16.
Callum's mother Anne said it took the boys about three years to start getting better chooks, and lately the hobby had taken them far and wide for shows.
"They spend hours and hours looking after their chooks," Ms Bodey said.
"They're very devoted and they've learned a lot from the older members of the club.
"There're a lot of kids out there who love their chooks."
The Ballarat Poultry Society's open show is the smaller of two shows to be held this year.
President Norm Hand said the society was already preparing for the championship show which will be held over two days in August.
Prizes, including a $5000 main prize and televisions for each section, are expected to make the field stronger than usual.
Mr Hand said breeders came from every state in Australia for the event.
