GORDON Primary School is officially the coldest primary school in Australia.
That's according to the Guiness world record that was broken yesterday, when about 526 schools in Australia simultaneously recorded the outside temperature, forming the world's largest interactive weather report.
"The response from schools to help with the record attempt has been fantastic," said Dick Whitaker, senior meteorologist for The Weather Channel.
"We've had schools sign up from all across Australia."
The record attempt, which is part of National Science Week, smashed the previous record of 261 schools, set in March this year.
The Central Highlands school recorded a temperature of 4 degrees with a wind chill of -0.8 degrees, making it the coldest primary school and second coldest of any school to participate in the record attempt.
Grade six students Joel Billinghurst, 11, and Leah Brash, 11, were chosen to take the official temperature at noon and then enter it into the online database. Students at Gordon are used to the cold, said
Joel. "We had snow last Monday."
School principal Dawn Vassallo was very supportive of the project. "It's something memorable for the students," she said.
"And because Gordon is a big farming area, people are very aware of the weather here and that rubs off on the children." The Big Report detailing the results was aired on the Weather Channel at 6pm
last night. Windermere Primary School was also involved in the event.
