Kids flipout, in name of safety

26/10/2008 11:27:00 PM
AERIALS, grinds, flip tricks and lip tricks were all on show yesterday.

The Ballarat Regional Skate Park attracted more than 250 kids for the youth skate event to end Community Safety month.

Ballarat bands 23rd of Elvis, The Summerians and Brand X played through the day as event organiser and Ballarat Youth resource officer Leading Senior Constable Des Hudson announced it a success.

"We ran one in April with the concept of bands, a barbecue and buses for the kids," Sen Const Hudson said.

"It was full of tricks and jumps by BMX riders and skaters and began a conversation about running this on a regular basis through summer."

Sen Const Hudson said the first idea for the event was a chance conversation between police and a service station attendant who was in a band.

"We talked about the concept, piloted it in April and a lot of bands were keen to get back in touch," he said.

"We planned one in June that got rained out, but this was a great event for all, with enthusiastic parents and a lot of others getting interested.

Sen Cons Hudson thanked the bands for taking part and the State Emergency Service for volunteering on the barbecue.

"It is a genuine community event," he said.

"It showcases the great venue on offer and a lot of great footage and photos were taken."

Melinda here, I am the drummer in the band The Pigs Arse, we also played at the skate park on Sunday. I was also the person who organised the bands and dj's for the event. I was slightly disappointed with The Courier for failing to mention our band at this wonderful community event which we were happy to support. Given the police have a sense of humour toward the band name and the fact that we were well recieved by the kids on the day, l find it rather prudish of the newspaper to leave us out given the name is somewhat of an accepted Aussie saying.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
